Supreme Court Upholds Rule: No CCTV Installation in Homes Without Consent of All Residents

New Delhi – In a landmark decision for privacy rights and CCTV regulations in India, the Supreme Court on May 9, 2024, affirmed a Calcutta High Court judgment that makes it illegal to install CCTV cameras inside a shared residence without the explicit consent of all its occupants.

By refusing to interfere with the High Court’s verdict, the Supreme Court has solidified a critical legal principle: an individual’s right to privacy within their home cannot be overridden by another resident’s desire for security surveillance. This ruling has significant implications for homeowners, tenants, and CCTV installation professionals across the country.
