The Value of 360 Degree Cameras for Mumbai Metro Surveillance

As Mumbai Metro continues to expand its reach across the Mumbai area, security remains a top priority to ensure passenger safety. An essential component of the Metro’s security infrastructure is its closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera network, allowing security forces to visually monitor stations, platforms, and trains.

In recent years, 360 degree cameras have emerged as an important CCTV technology for transportation settings like metros. Unlike traditional fixed cameras that cover a limited field of view, 360 cameras capture footage across an entire 360 degree perspective. This provides security personnel with complete situational awareness across an entire metro station or platform with no blind spots.

For a dense, complex environment like Mumbai Metro, this complete visual coverage holds tremendous value. Large metro stations can have myriad access points, platforms, passageways and recesses – perfect hiding spots for illegal or dangerous behavior. Fixed cameras often miss activity occurring just outside their fixed field of view. Yet 360 degree cameras allow suspicious activity to be tracked continuously with no place to hide.

Platform edge doors have been implemented and are monitored by CCTV cameras in Metro-1 and will be installed in other lines too. 360 degree cameras would allow the entire length of the platform to be monitored more effectively even outside the view of platform edge door cameras. On trains also, 360 degree cameras reduce blind spots to help detect pickpocketing, molestation and other crimes against women and vulnerable groups.

As Mumbai Metro aims to provide a safe, globally benchmarked transit environment to citizens, they should strongly consider deploying 360 degree surveillance cameras at stations and in trains alongside traditional CCTV tech. The situational awareness and reduced blind spots they provide serves Mumbai Metro’s goals of security, risk reduction and preparedness. With ridership expanding every year, 360 degree camera adoption will provide Metro staff superior visibility across their growing infrastructure
